YOUNG Women for ED (YW4ED) Manicaland has vowed to empower youths to ensure that they desist from engaging in social ills such as theft and drug abuse.
Speaking on the sidelines of the organization’s visit to St Mathias Tsonzo on Sunday, YW4ED Manicaland chairperson, Mrs Patricia Kundhlande said school children should always strive to shun social ills.
The Manicaland Chapter visited the school to ascertain the story behind the contentious issue of the disappearance of a learner, Livingstone Sunhwa (19), from St Mathias High School on December 6 last year.
Livingstone disappeared after he was allegedly linked to a break-in that had been reported at the school’s tuckshop.
He allegedly stole an assortment of groceries that were found tucked under his bed.
“We are here to understand what really happened. We are a professional entity that should not rely on social media on sensitive issues like this. We are glad that we have met the school authorities to understand the matter. YW4ED aims to mould responsible youths who shun social ills like theft and drug abuse.
The school’s headmaster, Mr Godfrey Sambona, exonerated the school of any wrong doing during an interview with The Manica Post.
“Police tracked some shoe prints from the tuckshop after the break-in. The shoe prints led them to the boys’ hostel. Investigations linked Livingstone to the crime and the stolen items were found underneath his bed. I don’t know why Livingstone’s mother is blaming me for her son’s disappearance, yet I did everything I could do to locate him.
“What is trending on social media is hogwash. I pleaded with the police to release him to enable him to sit for his examinations. Maybe that was my mistake as I am now being blamed for his disappearance. We handed Livingstone over to the boarding master.
“Following his disappearance we followed all the necessary channels and reported everything to the responsible authorities, including the police,” said Mr Sambona.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo, said they are treating Livingstone as a wanted fugitive from justice and a missing person.
Inspector Muzondo said investigations are in progress.
