The Young Women for Economic Development (YW4ED) Manicaland Chapter managed to mobilise at least 20 000 first time prospective voters for registration before the mobile voter registration exercise winded up on Monday, the Chapter’s chairperson, Mrs Patricia Kundhlande has said.

More than 200 people managed to register in Buhera West on Monday, while the rest registered across the province over the past few weeks.

This follows Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa’s call for young women in Buhera West Constituency to take advantage of the mobile voter registration exercise to register in their numbers.

Minister Mutsvangwa made the call on Sunday as she was handing over chicks for income generating projects to the young women.

At least 9 500 young women who are first time voters in Buhera West, Mutare South and Mutare West constituencies received the chicks.

The donations were sourced from President Emmerson Mnangagwa by YW4ED through Mrs Kundhlande.

Officiating at the event which was held in Murambinda on Sunday, Minister Mutsvangwa said first time voters are the future of the nation and should actively participate in economic empowerment programmes.

She commended Mrs Kundhlande for mobilising the young women across the province and taking a leading role in ensuring that ZANU PF garners five million votes during the 2023 harmonised elections.

“I am informed that at least 200 young women who were not registered as voters due to lack of identification particulars have since acquired these documents.

“It is quite commendable. Your peers should follow suit as we march towards acquiring the five million votes that ZANU PF is garnering for in next year’s harmonised elections. If this happens, we are guaranteed of victory,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

Mrs Kundhlande said targeting first time female voters is part of YW4ED’s mission.

“We mobilised thousands of young women to register as voters. We want to ensure a sweeping victory for President Mnangagwa during next year’s harmonised elections. Through our mobilisation, at least 20 000 first time voters were registered to vote.

“As YW4ED, we are solidly behind President Mnangagwa. We will ensure a resounding victory for President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF during the 2023 harmonised elections,” she said.

She said her organisation is going around the province empowering women.

Mrs Kundhlande said they will be helping young women to acquire drivers’ licences.
