ZIMBABWE today (Sunday) joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Refugee Day at a time the country looks back with pride over strides taken to give a humanitarian as well as developmental approach to the plight of asylum seekers.
The day is being celebrated under the theme: “Together we heal, learn and shine”.
According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 2021 will focus on the power of inclusion.
The remaining host for asylum seekers in the country, Tongogara Refugees Camp administrator Johani Mhlanga said: “The theme fits well like a jigsaw in what we have done in Zimbabwe. We have done exceptionally well to include refugees in our health, education and sports fields. We are a shining example in the region.
“We have over 2 400 refugee children at Tongogara Primary School, over 600 children at St Michaels Secondary school and 39 youths at universities dotted around the country.
“We also boast a state of the art primary health centre in the camp. Refugees in need of secondary and tertiary health services are supported by the Government of Zimbabwe free of charge.”
In a statement, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees wrote: “The shared experience of Covid-19 has showed us that we only succeed if we stand together.
“This year’s campaign calls for the greater inclusion of refugees in health systems, schools and sports.”
