LIBERATION war veterans in Manicaland yesterday received 16 tonnes of rice and 10 tonnes of roller meal to cushion them during the Covid-19 period.

The rice is part of the food aid sourced for vulnerable groups by President Mnangagwa, while the roller meal was donated by Masimba Holdings Limited to the Manicaland provincial Covid-19 taskforce to help alleviate hunger.

The food will benefit the vulnerable members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association in all seven districts of the province.

Handing over the food, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba said war veterans are part of the vulnerable groups in society, but they were often forgotten.

“Manicaland has suffered several disasters in the past year, from Cyclone Idai and a drought and now we have this pandemic to deal with.

“In all this, we have to remember our vulnerable people who cannot work to source food for themselves and their families.

“We realised that we have war veterans who can qualify in this category, but they are sometimes forgotten. In all we do, we should never forget the liberation war fighters,” she said.

Dr Gwaradzimba said the province is committed to ensuring that everyone receives food during this period and would continue to source for more food aid for those in need.

ZNLWA provincial chairman, Cde Gift Kagweda, said the assistance will go a long way in assisting some vulnerable cadres who can no longer work to feed their families.

“This food will go towards those who were injured, widows and others who are disadvantaged. Although this will not cover everyone, those who have benefitted will know that Government remembers them. Beneficiaries in all districts have already been identified by the respective chairpersons,” he said.
