The United Methodist Church (UMC) has donated personal protective equipment and hygiene materials to 20 schools in Buhera to combat the Covid-19 disease as schools prepare to reopen.

Making the donation, UMC District Superintendent, Reverend Diana Matikiti said the church’s charity arm — Chabadza Community Development Programme (CCDP) — was deploying the assistance from their Norwegian partners to complement efforts by both Government and other development partners in the Covid-19 fight.

“Our charity arm, as the name Chabadza reveals, means we acknowledge the great work that is already being done and we are only coming in to add to those efforts,” Rev Matikiti said.

Buhera District Administrator, Mr Freeman Mavhiza received the 200 buckets with tapes, 300 litres of liquid soap, 10 boxes of face masks, 500 latex gloves, 150 calendars and 400 information fliers.

He said the donation is timely as schools will eventually reopen.

“This is a timely intervention as it will give these schools a step towards meeting heath guidelines on safe school environments. The risk of transmitting the virus will be minimised,” said Mr Mavhiza.

District education schools’ inspector, Mr Godfrey Chibwanda said although there is still a lot of schools to be covered, beneficiaries are from the most impoverished communities.

“We are very grateful for the assistance and we hope by the time we open, all schools will be totally safe for both our pupils and teaching staff,” said Mr Chibwanda.

Speaking during a road show campaign to raise awareness at Murambinda Growth Point and surrounding rural areas, CCDP director, Rev Musafare Mususa urged capable people to support needy communities.

“This is a crucial time in the history of humanity. We have not been spared from the effects of this pandemic and it’s crucial for everyone who can assist to do so in whatever way they can. We all need to do whatever it takes to ensure we overcome this battle,” said Rev Mususa.
