A Rusape man, Courage Shoko died on the spot while  a former Rusape magistrate, now new Guruve resident magistrate, Mr Shingi Mutiro was lucky to escape with injuries when their car was involved in a head on collision with an Isuzu truck in Mvurwi last Friday.

Mr Mutiro sustained internal injuries and by the time of going to print he was still admitted at a private hospital in Shamva. The truck that hit Mr Mutiro’s car was overtaking an ox drawn scotchcart which was carrying tobacco for curing. Mr Mutiro tried swerve into the opposite lane to avoid a head on collision but it was too late.

Mr Mutiro’s car a Toyota Corolla was hit on passenger’s side where Courage was seated and the car rolled several times. The impact of the collision was intense and Courage was trapped in the car. Well wishers only managed to remove Mr Mutiro from the car and rushed him to Bindura Provincial hospital.

Courage’s legs were broken in the process; his stomach ripped open, had severe injuries on the neck and had his jaws broken also. The car had to be cut into pieces for the body to be retrieved.

The two were coming from their new working stations in Guruve, Mr Mutiro was transferred from Rusape Magistrates courts to Guruve at the beginning of this year. A transfer he had fiercely resisted arguing with the Judicial Service Commission that it was more of a demotion than a transfer. He told his close associates that he was contemplating leaving the bench to start his own private practice.

Courage had joined Guruve Rural District Council planning department on February 1 this year after a two year stint at Rusape Town Council working under the town planner and engineer’s department.

Mr Mutiro was coming back to Rusape for work as he was completing hearing cases at Rusape court every Saturday and also to see his family as he did not relocate with his family it.

Courage was coming also to see his mother and family members.
