MANICALAND Handball Association chairman Blessing Mudimba says comprehensive capacity building programmes for officials  is fundamental for the growth of the sport in the province.

Mudimba was speaking at the sidelines of the Manicaland Handball Association  workshop at Chikanga complex where teachers from Nyanga, Chipinge and Mutare attended.

The association in consultation with NASH embarked on a series of refresher courses around the province. So far they did refresher courses in Chipinge and Chimanimani for teachers before taking the training to Nyanga and Mutasa.

“Buhera, Makoni, Chimanimani and Nyanga are also going to do their refresher courses. We have agreed that only qualified and experienced officials will handle matches this year onwards. The officials will be taken from those who attended refresher courses as they have being appraised of the new changes in handball. Our officials should be in proper handball referees attire and properly affiliated for 2019 conditions which are  not negotiable

“We also did a  national level 1 course  at Chikanga sports complex  last week where our instructor was Manicaland provincial Referees chairman Obert Zhuwaokawelo. As from now onwards, all appointments of officials preference will be given to qualified level 1 referees who attended the technical refresher courses and the national level 1 courses before those who attended the workshops without any qualification are considered. We encourage   all table officials to  be qualified officials not athletes or learners,” he said.

Mudimba said that his association will have a level 2 coaching course in June in preparation of the inaugural level 3 course which is going to be done in August in Mutare.

“We are also going to have level 2 and 3 courses in June and August respectively. We are happy with  the local tertiary institutions for including handball on their sports calendars and hoped that sooner or later the institutions will start a local league amongst themselves so that they can play handball throughout the year from which teams for national championships will be chosen,” he said.
