A SWIMMING expedition for three minors ended tragically last Friday after a three-year-old drowned in Mwerahari River in Buhera.

The three Mzilikazi brothers were swimming in Mwerahari River when disaster struck and the eldest brother, Tendai (15), had to carry his younger brother, three-year-old Wellington’s body to their uncle’s homestead about a kilometre away.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.

“The three went to fetch water in Mwerahari River which is near Murambinda Growth Point. They later embarked on a swimming expedition and Wellington drowned during the process.

“Tendai tried to assist his brother in vain. Having realised that he was no longer breathing, Tendai carried the dead body to their uncle, Mr Steward Chikoti’s place. The matter was reported to the police,” said Inspector Kakohwa.

He urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and discourage their children from playing or swimming near water bodies.

No foul play is suspected in the Buhera incident.
