A ONE-year-old toddler was crushed to death by a Lobels Bread delivery truck after she crawled underneath the vehicle unnoticed as her father and the driver were having a conversation following a delivery.
Without checking underneath his vehicle as per guidelines in the Highway Code, the truck driver drove his vehicle, crushing the baby in the process.
The accident is now the talk of the town and police revealed this week that they were still investigating the incident.
Anopaishe Manyonganise of 3185 Magamba Extension in Rusape died on the spot at around 9am last Saturday.
She was crushed by the truck’s rear left double wheels.
Manicaland Police spokesman Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said drivers must observe road rules especially when driving in densely populated residential areas.
“On 15 October at around 9am Innocent Bunjira (42) parked his vehicle, an Isuzu 500 truck (ADV 6832). He engaged in a conversation with Samson Manyonganise, the father to the now deceased Anopaishe.
“The toddler followed her father and went under Bunjira’s vehicle without being noticed. After the conversation Bunjira drove his vehicle and ran over Anopaishe who was still under the vehicle. She had her head crushed with rear left wheels.
“She sustained head injuries and died on the spot. Police attended the scene and her body was referred to Rusape General Hospital for post mortem,” he said and added:
“We urge motorists to be alert whenever driving in residential areas as there is high human traffic. We also urge parents and guardians to take care of their children and ensure that they are playing in safe places.”
