DJ Cup clashes are proving popular with each day, drawing scores of crowds from across Mutare, following another intriguing contest held at Villa Spot in Dangamvura recently.

A total of 12 wheel spinners from across several entertainment joints in Mutare clashed in a tightly contested event which saw the host club’s DJ Famous scooping the coveted prize.

DJ Famous walked away with US$200, while Slimphat and Paul received US$100 and US$50 for being the first and second runners-up respectively.

The highly-subscribed event follows a Carling Black Label DJ Cup clash held in the city last month where budding wheel spinner, Phullstop won the provincial contest.

Last Saturday’s event was filled with twists and turns, but the best performer, DJ Famous took the crown home, beating a crop of young wheel spinners such as DJ Nash, VJ the DJ, Miles DJ and Zincyard who proved to be darlings of many.

The young crop made the night difficult for more established DJs such as Shamie D, Brizz, Huggflexy and Mshez who could not make it into the final rounds.

Nyanga-based wheel spinner, DJ Paul, shocked many with his dexterity and magic on the turntables after belting little-known, but well mixed songs.

He was voted third. He left many revellers clamouring for more.

Every DJ was mandated to show his expertise on the wheel for eight minutes only.

DJ Famous outwitted Slimphat in an intriguing final round. Besides the adjudicators, the crowd was allowed to vote for their favourite DJ after finishing the two-man contest in each pot competition.

The inaugural event was meant to promote, nurture, and appreciate the role of wheel spinners in spreading the message of peace, love, unity and discipline against social ills affecting youths such as drug and substance abuse, thievery and prostitution.

One of the organisers, Abel Zhakata described the event as a success. He said the event will be held in quarterly phases.

“It was an overwhelming experience. Ghetto youths and other imbibers of all ages gathered to cheer their djs, mix and mingle and feel talents of other wheel spinners whom they don’t see every day. It was easy for djs to preach the word of love, peace and unity and denounce drug and substance abuse as people were gathered on one turf.

“The adjudicators did well and they did not succumb to crowd’s pressures. We aim to come up with more exhilarating cup clashes in the near future,” said Zhakata.
