THREE people died, while 22 others were seriously injured after the commuter omnibus they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled twice before landing on its side in Chimanimani recently.

The commuter omnibus, according to police officials, was operating illegally in light of the national lockdown regulations.

Police confirmed the accident that occurred along the Matsororo-Cashel Highway.

The kombi — a Toyota Hiace owned by Nunurai Sondai — was being driven by his wife, Maria Kushinga. It was carrying 25 passengers, including the driver and the conductor.

“Upon approaching the Matsororo Bridge, the kombi hit a bumpy surface and veered off the road.

‘‘It rolled twice before landing on its side. One passenger died on the spot, while two others died upon admission at Mutambara Mission Hospital. 22 passengers sustained injuries,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.

He added: “This kombi was unauthorised and was defying lockdown regulations that all kombis should be parked. We urge commuters to use authorised Zupco buses and commuter omnibuses. They should desist from using illegal kombis. We will not hesitate to arrest kombi drivers who defy lockdown regulations.”
