Manchester United fans were furious after they scraped past League One Rochdale on penalties on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup having behind held 1-1 against the minnows after 90 minutes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won 5-3 on penalties but supporters were not happy with the performance.

One fan said: ‘Nothing to be proud of. Embarrassing performance’, and another took aim at the lack of backing for managers since Sir Alex Ferguson.

Another simply wrote: ‘Sack Ole. Embarrasing.’

Someone else said: ‘Embarrassing, this club is just plain embarrassing.’ And one more weight in with: ‘The players should give their weeks’ wage to the Rochdale players.

While another person called for the Red Devils boss to be axed as they said: ‘Joke performance. Sack him now.’ There were also calls for Ed Woodward’s head and a claim that he had set Solskjaer up to fail.

Mason Greenwood gave United the lead midway through the second half after a lackluster first half.

Luke Matheson, 16, equalised late on in what would have been a dream goal at Old Trafford.

United, who sit 10 points off league leaders and arch rivals Liverpool, return to league action against Arsenal on Monday night.

It hasn’t just been supporters to roundly criticise the current Manchester United side and there was a withering assessment from some big names at the weekend.

After United limped to a 2-0 defeat at West Ham, Graeme Souness was particularly damning. He said: ‘This is the worst group Manchester United have ever had since the Premier League started.

‘I think Man United find themselves in a very very difficult place,’ he continued. ‘The problems started long before Jose got there. From the minute Fergie left.

‘I’m not just blaming the managers. I think the people making football decisions have got to hold their hands up and say we’ve made some pretty awful decisions along the way.’

Former United skipper Roy Keane added: ‘I’ve be saying it for at least a couple of years, they’re just not good enough, a lot of these players. They are not good enough for Manchester United. It’s as simple as that.’

It seems even the Glazers understand what a massive task it will be to stop the rot. They believe the club will not be capable of challenging for the Premier League next season either as Ed Woodward’s ‘cultural reset’ will take time.

Sources understand the American owners have accepted that a three-year plan is in place to rebuild the club to their former glory. Daily Mail.
