The long and short of EPL January transfer

The ManicaPost

The January transfer window closed in England and Scotland on Tuesday night after a hectic final few hours of business.

THE most expensive incoming transfer was Southampton’s £14 million signing of Italy striker Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli, while Crystal Palace agreed a loan deal for Liverpool and France defender Mamadou Sakho very late on.

M’Baye Niang has completed his move from Milan to Watford, on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Burnley broke their transfer record to sign Republic of Ireland winger Robbie Brady from Norwich, while Odion Ighalo was the major exit, joining Chinese Super League club Changchun Yatai for £20m from Watford.

Signings announced in December, some of which only went through once the window opened, can be found here.

Below are some of the transfer deadline day rumours

Tottenham have rejected a late move from Turkish club Galatasaray to sign out-of-favour striker Vincent Janssen, 22, on a six-month loan deal. (ESPN)

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte missed out on signing Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon, 34, forcing him to block Asmir Begovic’s £10m switch to Bournemouth. (Daily Mirror)

Begovic was also the subject of a £10m bid from Watford – plus former Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, 35 – but it was also rejected by the Blues. (Daily Telegraph)

West Ham were keen to sign Ludogorets winger Jonathan Cafu, 25, with Leicester, Brighton and Stoke also thought to be interested, but no formal bid was made for the £10 million-rated Brazilian. (Sport Witness, via Daily Star)

Everton boss Ronald Koeman refused to permit the £15 million sale of Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy, 26, because he sees the player as a key part of his long-term plans. Newcastle were among those interested. (Daily Mirror)

The Toffees discussed the possibility of signing West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, 30, in the January window but will now wait until the summer before deciding on a number one. (Liverpool Echo)

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 27, says he has to leave the German side in the summer to “reach the next level” and Real Madrid “is still a dream”. (Fox Sports)

Rangers boss Mark Warburton says he was pleasantly surprised there were no late offers for winger Barrie McKay and hopes to keep the 22-year-old beyond the 18 months remaining on his contract. (Daily Express)

Former Stoke and Blackburn midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, 28, has signed a contract extension with Sevilla. Arsenal and Barcelona were among the club’s interested as his previous deal approached its summer expiry date. (AS)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has identified Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling as the club’s exciting young forward line of the future – but warned all of them to start delivering immediately. (Guardian)

Dimitri Payet will receive a £1m signing-on fee from Marseille after finally completing his transfer from West Ham. The total potential value of Payet’s four-and-a-half-year contract is £32 million, depending on performances, but he insists the move is not motivated by money. (Times)

Meanwhile West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has said that the club’s fans will remember Payet as “one of the greatest” once their anger over his move back to France subsides. (Daily Star)
