CONSUMERS have a stand-alone law that protects them in the Consumer Protection Act, Chapter 14:44, which was signed into law on December 10, 2019.

The Act aims to protect the consumer of goods and services by ensuring a fair, efficient, sustainable and transparent market place for consumers and businesses.

lt also seeks to provide for the establishment of the Consumer Protection Commission and its functions.

The law also provides for alternative dispute resolution and repeals the Consumer Contracts Act, Chapter 8:03.

Consumers are very important in any economy as they are a part in any business transaction.

It is very prudent for businesses as well consumers to acquaint themselves with the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act.

Business should respect and promote consumer rights from an informed position.

Responsible businesses should operate within the parameters of the law.

Consumers need to take an active role in learning and understanding their rights as outlined in the Consumer Contracts Act.

The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe will be explaining the Consumer Contracts Act section by section in coming weeks and consumers are free to seek clarifications on any section.
