South African nabbed smuggling cigarettes

LUCK ran out for a South African truck driver who was trying to smuggle boxes of cigarettes from Zimbabwe into the neighbouring country.Moyana Thompson (53) of House Number 370, Koja Street, Mandor in Johannesburg was convicted on his own guilty plea when he appeared before Mr Poterai Gwezhira facing smuggling charges as defined in Section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act, Chapter 23:02.

Thompson was ordered to pay $100 fine or risk 60 days imprisonment.

Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

The court heard that detectives stationed at Mutare Central District received information to the effect that there was a foreign registered Toyota Hino truck loaded with cigarettes.

Thompson intended to smuggle the cigarettes into Mozambique via an illegal port of entry.

Reacting to the information, the detectives found the alleged vehicle parked at Jakachira Industrial premises with Thompson inside.

Thompson confessed that he was intending to smuggle the cigarettes to South Africa via Mozambique through an illegal port of entry.

He was subsequently arrested and escorted to the police station.
