It was all smiles for some members of the Chimanimani community last Saturday when Eastern Legends Society handed over provisions to 20 families that were displaced by Cyclone Idai.

The donations which were mobilised by Tendayi Munyebvu, were made possible by contributions from international well-wishers.

Commenting on the initiative Munyebvu said: “I grew up in Chimanimani and when I heard of the disaster, I felt helpless being so far away from home. I decided to create an online platform to allow individuals from across the world to donate. That was the least I could do.”

The France based engineer said he was happy that nearly 100 people from all over the world donated to the cause through the online platform.

“Seeing the smiles on the faces of the recipients was very satisfying. I want to thank Eastern Legends Society for delivering the goods and Bob Nyabinde for sharing the message of hope as he entertained the affected families. It is important to let the survivors know that those around them care; knowing that people in other parts of the world feel their pain far outweighs the size of the donation,” said Manyebvu.

The displaced families that received groceries have been given shelter by Willis Ndangana at his family home and have been living there since disaster struck.

Speaking at the handover, Ndangana said: “We see the hand of God in this as we didn’t expect it and we want to thank Tendayi Munyebvu and all those who donated to make these food hampers possible.

“The parcels will go a long way in addressing the daily needs of cyclone survivors.

“We also want to thank Eastern Legends Society for delivering the goodies, Bob Nyabinde for the healing music which sparked laughter and adding smiles on our faces. Futhermore, we extend our gratitude to Richard Mvududu and Munya Simango for going out of their way taking time to drive to Chimanimani to deliver these much needed hampers.

“They left these families with so much happiness.”

Eastern Legends Society is a community of business people and professionals from different backgrounds who are involved in charity work as well as economic and social development in Manicaland.

The society has a number of programmes that are designed to address the development needs of marginalised communities.

Last Saturday’s handover was a follow up to the society’s initial donation of emergency relief items that was delivered in the immediate aftermath of the cyclone.
