THE SEVENTH DAY Adventist (SDA) Church in the Mutare North district over the weekend donated assorted items worth hundreds of dollars to 50 families in Ndorikanda village, Manica Bridge.
The donated items included clothes, blankets, bags, shoes, sugar, cooking oil, salt, bathing and washing soap as well as mealie-meal.
According to the organiser, Mrs Beauty Mutemeli, the donations were made to all needy members of the community regardless of their denominational affiliation.
She also said the act was part of the church’s community social responsibility culture.
“The Ndorikanda community shares with us their land and lets us hold our campsite meetings in their backyard. We realised that they are welcoming people and we felt we should also extend our support to them with the little that we have.
“We recognise, appreciate that giving back to the communities in which we conduct our church services in is Godly way that other Christians should emulate,” she said.
She said it was not the quantity of the donation that mattered, but the reason behind the donation that needed to be taken into consideration.
Mrs Mutemeli said giving to the poor was a divine responsibility given to all Christians by God adding that it is the character of Christ which everyone who identifies themselves as Christian must imitate. She said the SDA Mutare North District, has other communities that they were also hoping to donate to.
Heademan Ndorikanda thanked the SDA community for donating the goodies to the community a few weeks before the festive holidays.
“We are very grateful and would like to thank the SDA church for what they did here, they donated goods which include sugar and cooking oil to us despite the fact that those commodities are costly on the market these days.
They are also facing economic hardships but they still donated to us, it is quite commendable.
“There are not many SDA families in the Ndorikanda community but they saw it fit to give in spite of that,” said Headman Ndorikanda.
