TWO Chikanga men who allegedly broke and entered into a local salon and stole property worth $1 700 were remanded in custody by a Mutare magistrate.

Carlos Nyakunu (24) and Travolta Martin (23) were remanded to August 17 after they had denied the charges of unlawful entry they were facing.

The pair appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura.

Led by Mr Fletcher Karombe, the State alleged that on July 29, Nyakunu and Martin entered the backyard of Angels 2 Hair Salon which is situated in the Central Business District and used a screwdriver to break the windowpane.

After gaining entry into the salon, the pair allegedly stole a silver Dell laptop and various hairdressing items worth $1 715 and went away unnoticed.

“Acting on a tip-off, detectives pounced on Nyakunu and Travolta who were selling the stolen items at Sakubva Musika and arrested them,” said Mr Karombe.

It was also alleged that the pair’s fingerprints were sent to the Scenes of Crime Police Department for comparison where Nyakunu’s fingerprints came positive.

Said Mr Karombe: “Upon his arrest, Nyakunu was also putting on white and blue sneakers whose prints matched those photographed on the crime scene.”

Total value stolen is $1 715 and only property worth $400 was recovered.

In his defence, Nyakunu said they had picked the stolen property from the river that is opposite OK Mart.

“Your Worship, we did not steal this property from the salon.

“We actually picked it up from opposite OK Mart and thought that someone had thrown it away,” said Nyakunu.

Mrs Chiundura, however, told them that the court would not force them to plead guilty and that the truth would come out after their trial.

The pair will appear in court for their trial on August 17.
