SAKUBVA Legends Super League has emerged with 14 teams participating this year and hopes to develop through the club system policy initiated by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Sakubva Legends Super League was formed last year with 10 teams and it collapsed due to financial hardships. This year, 14 teams have affiliated to join the league and are all from Sakubva.

Patrick Fourpence, chairperson of the league, said the teams once ran away from the league to join Mutare Super League but have now returned.

“As the Sakubva league faced challenges last year, the teams joined the Mutare Super League. They withdrew from that league because some teams could not afford transport money and affiliation fees.

“The board of the Sakubva league sat down together for the second time and decided to resume the local league again but this time we had more teams than we had the last time,” said Fourpence.

“At first, the Legends league was meant for the advanced age players, above 35. It catered mainly for those who used to play soccer in competitive leagues. It later incorporated youngsters who once played in Division Two. The board of the league then decided to embrace these ghetto stars to different teams. Now the league is dominated by these up-coming football stars,” said Fourpence.

The league is played by everyone and their rules highlight that in each and every team there should be senior players playing with the upcoming footballers.

The 14 teams in the league include Musika Stars, Delta, Pouncho United, All Stars, Chisamba Legends, Zinwa, United Rebels, Speedstars, Deaf Cobras, Tanganda, Cains, Cracking Tigers, Dribbling Lions and OTS Pirates. Of the 14 teams, Deaf Cobras is a team of deaf players.

“With the new policy by the Ministry of Sports of club system we believe that our league and teams will develop since we now have the chance to transact with other big teams taking players from our off-shore,” he added.
