IT was pomp and fanfare when hundreds of senior citizens from Rusape’s 10 wards converged at Vengere Stadium where they were spoiled by Makoni Central MP Mr David Tekeshe.

The initiative was a way of sharing Christmas festivities with the usually poor and unwell senior citizens. They received free sumptuous buffet, meat for Christmas and drugs for ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart complications courtesy of the legislator’s benevolence.

There was much fun and laughter among the senior citizens as they sang, danced and prayed together. The beneficiaries hailed the MP for bringing them together to share yesteryear memories in a relaxed environment.

Some describe him as “a man of the people” and “in touch” with the marginalised in his constituency.

Gogo Rhoda Ziumbe (85), of G57, Vengere, said the Christmas party for the elderly was the first of its kind and thanked Mr Tekeshe for providing them with medication.

“I am touched by what he has done for us. He could have ignored us, but he saw it fit to bring us together to enjoy food and drinks. Some of us can no longer visit each other, but today we were all brought together to reminisce on yesteryear experiences in a relaxed environment. May God bless him for his benevolence.

“I am happy with the drugs he purchased for some of us today. We had approached his office requesting for medication, and he responded positively,” she said.

Ambuya Bridget Ndowa (64) of VE 201, Vengere said Mr Tekeshe was rare breed of leaders as he performed his duties without wearing a political jacket.

Her sentiments were also echoed by Ambuya Anna Ndowa of G71 in Vengere who said the young generation should respect and care for its elders.

Mr Tekeshe, a businessman in his own right, said it was his motivation to keep senior citizens smiling.

“The idea was to ensure the poor and often neglected golden boys and girls share a lighter moment. It is important to spare time and resources to spend with senior citizens as they are important members of the society. I will do the same in the other six rural wards of my constituency.

“I slaughtered four beasts and three porkers for them. Some of them had approached my office requesting for medication, which we handed over to them today so that they enjoy the festive holiday in sound health,” said Mr Tekeshe.

“Believe me; any generation that despises its elders is cursed. The young generation should not mistaken old age with witchcraft, but celebrate it as a blessing from God,” said the MP.
