A TOTAL of nine musical groups will battle for supremacy at this year’s Chibuku Road to Fame Manicaland provincial finals which are slated for tomorrow (Saturday) at Chinyausunzi Beerhall in Sakubva.

The groups that had registered to perform by Tuesday afternoon are Chipinge Stars (Zim-dancehall), City Boys (Zim-dancehall), Music Addicts (Zim-dancehall), Deze Rawasu (traditional mbira music), Tunes of Harmony (afro-contemporary), Eastern Vibration Band (afro-jazz), Manica Addicts (afro-jazz) Expressions (afro-fusion) and Mnenga (afro-centric).

National Arts Council Manicaland provincial manager, Caroline Makoni said this year’s contest promises to be a thriller as it now encompasses other genres.

The contest, which was previously dominated by sungura and afro-jazz fusion music, is now open for Zim-dancehall and hip-hop.

“Preparations are at an advanced stage. The bands have adequately prepared for the competitions and are raring to go. They are hoping to achieve the same feat as Dapurahunanzva which took pole position at the recently held national finals in Harare.

“We are looking forward to a highly-competitive event. We urge people to come in their numbers to support the artistes,” said Makoni. In the 2019 edition of the Chibuku Road to Fame Manicaland provincial competitions, Eastern Riders won the contest after outplaying seven other outfits that participated in the tightly-contested event.

Ragga Manyika sensation, Assegai Crew, were the guest artistes and they belted hits from past productions.he contest is back after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
