Redwing Darts team cheats death

MANICALAND’S representatives in the Champions of Champions Darts Tournament  – Redwing Mine Darts team – was involved in a road accident last Thursday evening.

The team was travelling to Munyati in Kwekwe for the Champions of Champions Darts Tournament when the accident happened.

The mishap happened just before Kwekwe. Manicaland Darts Association chairman, Alex Chamisa, confirmed the accident, adding that the team was travelling to Kwekwe to participate in the Champions of Champions competition.

“There were nine players on board. The driver lost control of the vehicle after an oncoming haulage truck failed to dim its lights.

“They rammed into a lorry and the vehicle rolled four times,” he said.

The players who were in the kombi included Charles Kadzu, Norbert Madzvimbo, Presley Chimuzinga, Privilege Lasamani, Elias Basiyawo,  Luke Kamanga, Lucky Sameke, Francis  Majekwa and Boniface Masha.

All the players were rushed to Kadoma District Hospital for treatment. Most of them suffered head, shoulder and back injuries.

National Darts Association of Zimbabwe secretary, Steve Mwarindira, said they were disturbed by the news of the accident.

“We were saddened to learn that one of our teams was involved in an accident while travelling to participate at the Champions of Champions Tournament.

“We wish them a speedy recovery.

“Champion of Champions tournament is an annual event where two teams from each province take part.

“All in all there will be 20 teams. Manicaland had two teams, Redwing Mine and ZRP Changadzi,” he said.

Redwing Mine immediately returned back home after the accident and only ZRP Changazi proceeded.

ZRP Changazi could not go past the group stages as they were dismissed in the preliminary rounds of the competition.

ZRP Changadzi was in Group A together with Mimosa, Jewel Arrows and Mwenezana.

Changadzi received $200 for participating. Mimosa and Jewel Arrows Darts clubs won bronze medals and $300 each.

ZRP Buchwa came second were awarded $400. A Team Darts Club from Mashonaland West Province were the champions.

They received a floating trophy, medals and $500.
