AN elderly Mutasa woman was raped by an unknown man who proceeded to steal Zimbabwe dollars from her thinking that they were American dollars. Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident which happened in Kadzunga Village in Chief Mutasa’s area.
He said on the day in question, the complainant was sleeping alone in her bedroom when the accused broke in, wearing a balaclava.
The complainant’s attempts to scream were in vain as the suspect threatened her with death.
After raping her, the suspect demanded keys to the complainant’s bedroom, but she refused to surrender them.
“He force-opened the door and stole the Zim-dollars, thinking he had hit jackpot,” said Asst Insp Chananda
The complainant confided in her friend the following morning and the friend advised her to report the matter to police.
Asst Insp Chananda said police were working round the clock to bring the perpetrator to book.
In an unrelated incident, a 17-year-old teenager from Mabvazuva Township in Rusape was last week raped by a man who lied to her that he wanted to buy a bundle of firewood she was selling.
Asst Insp Chananda said the suspect, Jonathan Mukandishaya (28), will appear in court soon facing rape charges.
The complainant was on her way to Vengere Market to sell firewood when she met the accused along a footpath.
“The complainant met Mukandishaya at around 9am along a footpath. He offered to buy the complainant’s bundle of firewood. The teenager consented, as the ‘buyer’ persuaded the complainant to follow him to his house, claiming that he had left his money there,” said Asst Insp Chananda.
The road to Mukandishaya’s ‘home’ passed through a bushy area and after a few metres’ walk, Mukandishaya, dragged the complainant for about 50 meters from the foot path and raped her once. He threatened to stab her with a knife if she told anyone about the incident.
“While in the process of raping the teenager, Mukandishaya heard voices coming from the road and stopped. He then hid behind a bush, but the complainant immediately raised alarm. This drew the attention of Owen Mukamba and Ever Bete who then searched the place and effected a citizen’s arrest on Mukandishaya, whom they dragged and handed over to the police,” said Asst Insp Chananda.
