A SUPERVISOR and a teller with POSB’s Chipinge were arrested for allegedly stealing US$44 000 from the safe.

Stanley Makokove (40) and Tarisai Shora this week appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi facing theft charges.

Makokove is employed as the bank supervisor, while Shora is a teller.

They both pleaded not guilty.

They were represented by Mr Langton Mhungu of Mhungu and Associates, who successfully applied for $5 000 bail each.

The matter was adjourned to November 25 for trial.

Prosecuting, Mr Timothy Katsande told the court that on October 29, Makokove and Shora hatched a plan to steal from their employer.

“On that day around 12am, the two tampered with the bank’s CCTV cameras so that they would not capture footage of the vault area. They opened an unlocked vault and took US$44 112 from the safe,” said Mr Katsande.

The accused wrapped the money in a khaki envelope and enclosed it with a photocopy of Makokove’s driver’s licence.

They stashed the money in a black bag, the court heard.

Added Mr Katsande: “The two connived to hide the bag containing the money in the teller’s area. On the same day, Makokove misrepresented to his superiors that he had lost the vault and safe keys. He was provided with duplicate keys and when they opened the vault and safe it was discovered that the money had vanished.”

The matter was reported to the police.

Investigations were carried out, leading to the duo’s arrest.
