HUNDREDS of illegal panners who last month besieged the banks of Sakubva River in search of alluvial gold deposits have since packed their bags in disappointment after coming out empty handed.
With hopes of striking gold the panners dug up deep trenches but they later abandoned ship in frustration.
When The Manica Post visited the site yesterday morning only a handful of die-hard panners were still trying their luck.
“There is nothing here my brother. We are only getting a few grammes after doing a lot of work. If we had anything to do we could have been gone a long time ago. As you can see no one is here. What is only left are these trenches,” said one of the panners who only identified himself as Joseph.
The banks of the river have since turned into bad land as deep trenches were dug out all over.
This poses a threat to human and animal movement as some of the pits are more than 20 metres deep.
