THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has urged local authorities in Manicaland Province to ensure that no development takes place on wetlands.

This follows the mushrooming of both commercial and residential properties on wetlands over the years, especially in high density suburbs which has resulted in flash floods each time it rains heavily.

EMA provincial manager Mr Kingstone Chitotombe said development on wetlands does not only causes floods but also poses a serious threat of polluting clean water sources.

Residents who built their houses on wetlands and waterways suffered losses when some of their domestic property, personal possessions, food stocks, and valuable assets were washed away or destroyed in flash floods after the heavy downpour which pounded the province during the rain season.
