THE Independence Flame was early today taken to the two adjacent districts of Nyanga and Mutasa as part of its relay in the host province of Manicaland.

The Flame first arrived at the Nyanga District Heroes Acre in the morning from where it was then taken to the Matumba Six Shrine in Mutasa in the afternoon.

Hundreds of enthusiastic citizens braved the chilly weather to witness it’s arrival at the revered heritage site in Mutasa.

Speaking at the ceremony ZANU PF politburo member Cde Supa Mandiwanzira hailed President Mnangagwa for decentralising important national events such as the National Independence Day celebrations to provinces.

“We would like to thank President Mnangagwa for bringing the Independence Day celebrations to Manicaland Province. We are gathered here at Matumba Six Shrine, which is one of the most significant places in the province, where freedom fighters were cruelly brutalised and lost their lives fighting for the freedom of this nation,” said Cde Mandiwanzira, who is also the Member of House Assembly for Nyanga South.

Chief Mutasa implored the nation to remember and respect the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in liberating the country from the yoke of colonialism.

He called for unity of purpose among citizens in the development of the nation.

The event was also attended by Chiefs Gwenzi and Mapungwana (Chipinge), war veterans, war collaborators and members of the public.

The flame left Mutasa for Mutare Provincial Heroes Acre enroute Chimanimani, Chipinge, and then the formerDzapasi Assembly Point, where it will be taken to the main venue where President Mnangagwa will address the nation.
