THE Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has warned farmers and the public that there are fraudsters on the prowl who are impersonating their employees, while others are posing as agents or middlemen to swindle unsuspecting victims.

Grain producers are the main target of the scammers and there have been reports of people being ripped off after getting into dubious transactions with the conmen.

This comes in the wake of Government’s recent announcing of new producer prices for the 2023 marketing season.

Farmers will be paid in US$ and in local currency converted at the interbank rate, with the bigger chunk being paid in foreign currency.

In a statement, GMB said: “The Grain Marketing Board would like to warn the public from falling prey to conmen who are purporting to be employees of GMB. The conmen purport to facilitate timeous payment of deliveries, purchase of products like maize meal and getting foreign currency.

“However, once the conmen are paid in the given account, they eventually disappear without any trace.”

GMB advised the public and farmers that it does not have any agents for procurement and payment of any product, urging people to report such any incidents to their nearest depot or any police station.
