FORMER Marymount Teachers’ College principal, Mr Henry Sarayi Munodawafa (80) has died.

He died in Leicester, United Kingdom on December 24 after battling prostate cancer.

Mr Munodawafa was a respected teacher-cum-lecturer who ushered and set academic standards in Manicaland Province in the post-independence era.

He dedicated more than 40 years of his life to multi-sectoral education delivery, administration and policy development in different provinces across the country.

Family spokesperson, Mr Julius Munodawafa said they have lost a role model.

He said: “As a family, we are deeply saddened by the passing away of our father figure. He was a mentor and an educator who was full of wisdom. He was a caring leader who believed in empowering others.”

Mr Munodawafa’s dedication to the growth of the education sector, saw him working with students not only in classrooms as an external assessor on the Theory of Education, plus in administrative capacity as Vice Principal of several secondary and tertiary institutions in the country including Mutare Teachers’ and Masvingo Teachers’ colleges between 1985 and 1995, but also in their welfare issues when he served as Dean of Students at both colleges.

His leadership acumen saw him occupy roles on a national scale as a board member in the Zimbabwe National Farmers’ Union, Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association, Indigenous Commercial Farmers Union, Nyadire Teachers’ College Advisory Board and as a national convenor on the Committee on Early Childhood Education.

The family spokesperson said the family is working round the clock to repatriate his body to Zimbabwe where he wants to be buried.
