IN a bid to equip girls with sporting skills and raise awareness on issues affecting them, a local sports academy is set to host training camps across Manicaland Province.
After School Hoops Zimbabwe, an oraginisation that is into developing sport from the grassroots level and in schools, said their goal is to create safe spaces for young people through sport.
The academy’s representative, Tafadzwa Ndawana, said the camps will be held this month in Chipinge, Nyanga and Mutare districts as well as Rusape.
“As After School Hoops Zimbabwe, we are going to host basketball camps this month. Our aim is to address through sport the different issues affecting the girl child in schools and their communities.
“Through the programmes, girls will interact and learn as they get empowered with leadership and sports skills so as to nurture and mentor them at an early stage.
“This will help prepare them for the accomplishment of their goals in life and keep them away from drug and substance abuse as well as early marriages,” said Ndawana, who is also responsible for girl child programmes at the academy.
She added that through education and sport, girls can be involved and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.
