CHITAKATIRA High School head, Mr Michael Mapaura, has retired after reaching the retirement age in December last year.

Mr Mapaura, who was popular for his neatly kempt grey hair which earned him the nickname ‘Whitehead’, was treated to a lavish farewell party by his former school last Friday.

The event was attended by several prominent people from business, education and traditional leaders, among others.

Speaker after speaker spoke highly about Mr Mapaura’s humility, dedication to duty and his ability to make people laugh by cracking jokes at any given time.

Mutare District Schools Inspector (DSI), Mrs Tracy Mademutsa, who was the guest of honour and was represented by Vumba Circuit Schools Inspector, Mr Isaac Kusena, said: “Mr. Mapaura was an upright educationist who was never charged for any misconduct during his entire career and this speaks volumes about his character and integrity.”

The SDC chairperson, a Mrs Mwedzi, praised Mr Mapaura for his visionary leadership which resulted in the school acquiring a school bus.

Mr Mapaura also managed to spearhead the erection of a precast wall around the school, the installation of a security fence within the school and the construction of fish ponds, among other notable achievements.

Academically, it was during his period as head that one of their learners scored 25 points at “A” Level and the learner is now a fourth year Actuarial Science student at a local university.

Mr Mapaura served the education sector for 38 years, and 20 of those years were spent at Chitakatira High School as headmaster.
