FARMERS in Manicaland have been urged to diversify their crop production to enhance food security at household, district and provincial levels.

In her speech during a seed and food fair at Poret Centre in Chimanimani District recently, Minister of Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Nokuthula Matsikeneyere, said farmers should turn to the production of small grains to mitigate the ravaging effects of climate change.

“With the climate change phenomenon, it is also prudent for farmers to look at small grains production as an option to enhance food security. Let us continue working hard as farmers so that the country attains food self-sufficiency,” she said.

Minister Matsikenyere said in the face of recurrent droughts, there is need to invest in robust irrigation development and intensify the climate-proofed Pfumvudza programmes to increase production and productivity.

Government is moving to promote resilience and sustainable agriculture under the National Development Strategy (NDS 1) to enhance food and nutrition security.
