WITH villagers in Buhera increasingly turning to wood for material to construct vending stalls and for other domestic uses, wanton cutting down of trees has become rampant in the district.
Mutiusinazita, Gwama and Bangure are among the most affected areas.
This has resulted in soil erosion, siltation, increased greenhouse gases emission, decreased groundwater levels and the disruption of the ecological system which is exacerbating the impact of climate change.
Buhera Residents Network Trust director Mr Leaonard Mabasa urged villagers to preserve forests.
“Deforestation has become a major challenge in our communities. Villagers cutting down trees for material to construct vending stalls and firewood have to find alternative sources. In the face of climate change, destroying our forests can have far-reaching repercussions. We need to preserve the trees and the environment,” said Mr Mabasa.
He called for a coordinated approach between forestry authorities, local leadership, police and the communities in tackling deforestation.
