MUTARE-Chimanimani Senator Cde Monica Mutsvangwa, who was recently elected to chair the SADC Women’s Advancement and Youth Empowerment Sub-Committee, says she will execute her new roles well because of an enabling gender sensitive and youth empowerment culture in Zimbabwe that was ushered by the new Constitution.
In an interview this week, Sen. Mutsvangwa said she was humbled to be elected.
“I am very happy to have been elected. We will work as a collective body and ensure that we take women issues to another level as well as encourage positive youth development. It is a big responsibility and I am grateful to my country.
“In Zimbabwe, we are grateful because there are a lot of programmes that promote women empowerment and youth development. President Mugabe is a champion of gender equality, women empowerment and youth development. All these things are well coined in our new Constitution which is women-inclined and gender sensitive. In Sadc, we all realize that youths are the future and we need to mobilize resources and ensure their development,” she said.
Zimbabwe’s representatives to the SADC Parliamentary Forum include senators Tambudzani Mohadi, Dr Samuel Mukanduri and Cde Mutsvangwa, all of Zanu-PF, Mr Innocent Gonese from the MDC-T and Ms Jasmine Toffa from the MDC.
The SADC PF is an inter-parliamentary institution. It shares all rights and privileges enjoyed by other institutions of the SADC.
It was launched in July 1996 and was officially approved, in accordance with Article 9 (2) of the SADC Treaty, by the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government in Blantyre, Malawi, on 8th September 1997.
