THE recently formed Mutare Women Social Soccer League has started getting the ball rolling.

Last Saturday all the teams converged at Sakubva 2 High School for a tournament organised by the league’s vice-chairman, Obert Makuwaza.

The girls showcased their football skills much to the amazement of most men who were present. No doubt that the girls in the province are equipped with all basic football skills.

The tournament’s organiser, Obert Makuwaza, was on cloud nine as everything went according to plan.

An ecstatic Makuwaza thanked all coaches and teams for finding time to participate at the event.

“I am very happy to see such skills from our girls. A special thank you goes to coaches for tireless mentoring the girls to play exciting and entertaining football.
We also want to thank FACT for donating dinner and tea sets to us. We are very encouraged by such donations and it will go a long way in motivating the players,” he said.

The 11-team league was formed with the aim of empowering women through sport and eradicating any forms of social and sexual abuse in Sakubva.

Nyamauru High School outshined all the other teams followed by Admire Mahachi-coached side Faith Drive. The host, Sakubva 2, found the going tough and managed a third position ahead of Tafara City Vellos and Jacob Mutari’s Aloe Queens.

The climax of the event was when all the teams and the league administrators visited Chisamba Singles popularly known as Japan to donate a dinner set to a 15-year-old child mother, who was abused and impregnated at the age of 13.

The child mother’s mother narrated to all the players how her young daughter was abused. She said they were in the process of sourcing school fees for abused and orphaned girls in Sakubva since they are working towards ending abuse in the area.

The teams that did not take part include Yadah Queens which had other commitments. Bezel Bridge teams and Odzi teams failed to make it due to financial constraints.

The league is flowing smoothing with most of the teams fulfilling their fixtures. The league is being dominated by Nyamauru and former ZIFA League side, Faith Drive.

Newly formed City Vellos FC is slowly gaining ground in the league.
