FORMER Mutare Boys High student, Alwin Mushonga, recently added another medal to his cabinet when he snatched the GLVC Student Athlete of the Week honours in the United States.

Mushonga was part of players pooled in six groups that played in the first group, which included all top players from five learning institutions.

The GLVC Student Athlete of the Week is an award for best players at the institutions.

“It is always an honour to be recognised because of your talents, more importantly being picked out of 14 schools throughout the Great Lakes Valley Conference,” he said.

The talented 23-year old, who is studying at Mckendree University in Lebanon Illinois in the United States of America, attributed the recognition to his outstanding performance in most tournaments played during this season.

“I have been playing really good this season. I have been coming out tops for my school and this is because of the hard work I have been putting in my game.

“This is my first time winning this award and it really made me proud of my efforts. When your talent is recognised like this, it boosts your confidence and you get to look forward to the next challenge,” said Mushonga.

Mushonga joined Mutare-based tennis players’ great trek to the US  in 2017. They were playing a school in Florida, which was ranked fourth in the United States.

Mushonga said he is looking forward to representing Zimbabwe in international competitions.

“If I am selected to represent my country, I would do so gladly at any given time. I won’t even need to think twice about that,” he said.

However, Mushonga is no stranger to waving the Zimbabwean flag during international competitions as he has done so since the age of 12.

The tennis player represented Zimbabwe in the junior Davis Cup in Egypt.
