MUTARE City Council has adopted 15 children under the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund and will pay school fees for them in 2020.

The Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund has been running for over 10 years and seeks to raise funds to give back to the less privileged in the community.

This year’s edition was launched last Saturday.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Wilson Dzotso of Sakubva, appreciated council’s thrust to invest in the future.

“We are really grateful for what our city fathers have done. I was finding it difficult to pay fees for my grandchild. I am really thankful that they have adopted my grandchild. Most schools had topped up their fees and that was way beyond my reach,” he said.

Ten beneficiaries from each of the city’s 19 wards were also selected to receive food hampers.

Mbuya Makore from Ward 6 Dangamvura said the groceries would help her during this festive season.

“I was not expecting this at all. I did not even know what to give my family on Christmas, but because of this kind gesture from the city council, my family will have smiles on their faces,” she said.

Mutare Mayor Cllr Blessing Tandi applauded the various stakeholders who contributed to the fund.

“I extend my gratitude to the corporate partners and individuals who donated funds that were used in this year’s Cheer Fund. Regardless of the economic difficulties, we still have to have the spirit of ubuntu,” he said.
