MUTARE Central District won the provincial Commanders’ Sports Gala held at Mutare Boys’ High School last weekend.

A total of seven districts participated. Mutare Central District scooped the highest number of medals, with seven gold medals and two silver medals. On second position was PHQ which amassed two gold medals, five silver and four bronze medals. Rusape scooped two gold medals and six silver.

The seven districts battled it out in various sporting categories such as netball, volleyball, chess, woman and men soccer, athletics and table tennis. Speaking after the award ceremony, Mutare Central District Commander, Plaxedis Phuthi, said she was happy with her district’s performance at the gala.

She said: “I am very happy as the district commander of Mutare Central District. My district did very well and this is a sign of hard work and dedication. I would like to congratulate all the selected athletes from my district to work hard and raise the provincial flag high during the Commissioner General’s Gala. I believe we have a lot from our districts who were selected to represent Manicaland. I am very happy and I would like to thank every participant who has participated today.”

Speaking after the tourney, guest of honour, Officer Commanding Police in Manicaland, Isaac Tayengwa, said sports help in creating self confidence, reduces stress and improve their performances as the officers carry their duties in their respective districts. He also commented on the level of discipline that the athletes exhibited.

“One of the major thrust of the event is to select a strong competitive team to represent the province at the forthcoming Commissioner General’s Gala in April. I understand there are some athletes who excelled and are going into camp soon in preparations for the forthcoming Commissioner General’s Sports Gala in Harare in April.

In turn those selected will also get a chance to be selected into the ZRP SARPCO team for the games that will take place later on this year. I want to encourage all the selected athletes to embrace team spirit in whatever they do and bear in mind that they are representing Manicaland Province. I want to commend you all for your good behaviour and discipline which you displayed during the games,” he said.

Police provincial sports officer, Samson Napulu, said he was very pleased with the level of competition among the athletes who participated. He also congratulated those who were selected to represent the province. He argued them to work hard as they would be carrying the provincial flag.
