A Rusape man was allegedly murdered in cold blood by three assailants who are now fugitives from justice.

The three suspects allegedly waylaid Antony Shumbaimwe (30) of ZBS in Vengere who was walking with his girlfriend and stabbed him on the abdomen with a sharp object.

The suspects dumped Shumbaimwe’s body on the street.

The incident occurred in the wee hours on Monday when the victim and his girlfriend were on their way home from a watering hole.

While the phenomenon of street crime has been largely ignored in the town, Shumbaimwe’s case has exposed how unsafe the streets have become, especially under the cover of darkness.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed Shumbaimwe’s death, and said investigations are in progress to bring the suspects to book.

He appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the assailants to report to their nearest police station.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said they are treating the matter as murder.

“The deceased was identified as Anthony Shumbaimwe (30) of ZBS in Vengere, who prior to his death, was drinking alcohol at Lilly Night Club. He left the night club at around 1am on Monday as he proceeded home.

“He was drinking alcohol with his 20-year-old girlfriend, and they left the club together. While on their way home, three unknown accused persons approached them at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Turn-off.

“The unknown accused persons attacked Shumbaimwe with an unknown sharp object. They left him lying on the ground in a pool of blood,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said police were alerted of the incident and rushed to the scene.

They conveyed Shumbaimwe’s body to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

“After attacking Shumbaimwe, the suspects approached his girlfriend who was walking behind with her friend. The two asked them about the bloodstains that were on their clothes. The three assailants failed to provide clear answers and vanished into the darkness.

“A passer-by saw Shumbaimwe’s body lying in a pool of blood the following morning and advised an informant who then made a police report.

“The suspects are still at large and those with information on what transpired should approach Rusape Police Station or their nearest police station,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

He appealed to people to avoid walking around at night.
