THE ZUPCO fleet is set to receive a major boost in time for the festive season, with another batch of 100 new buses being offloaded in Durban.

This set of new coaches is two times the regular size the country usually takes delivery of and is expected to help the public transporter provide improved intercity services following the recent relaxation of the Covid-19 national lockdown from Level Four Four to Level Two.

The development will ease the burden of transport on the commuting public that has been at the mercy of mushikashika, illegal transporters and unregistered vehicles that are picking passengers at undesignated points and creating traffic congestion while playing hide and seek with the police.

Zupco acting chief executive Mr Everisto Mudangwa said the buses were in Durban.

“We are still waiting for the buses to be offloaded at the Durban port, then they will be transported to Zimbabwe,” said Mr Mudangwa.

President Mnangagwa recently commissioned a batch of 50 Golden Dragon Zupco buses from China that were distributed to areas affected by transport challenges across the country as the public transporter continues to build its fleet with regular deliveries.

Government has over the last 12 months imported close to 500 buses from China to boost the Zupco fleet while also beginning the process of standardising models, easing maintenance and allowing decent stock of spares.
