AFRO-FUSION group, Mokoomba, proved why they are arguably the most internationally travelled band in Africa after they put up a sterling performance at Courtauld Theatre last week on Friday.

Merrymakers had a non-violent and thrilling evening as they enjoyed their favourite drinks and unique melodies, a shift from the venue’s usual Zim Dancehall and traditional music.

The group showed why they have travelled and conquered over 45 countries at some of the world’s biggest festivals after they stunned revellers with their excellent guitar skills and smashing vocals.

Although the venue was not packed to the brim, most music enthusiasts enjoyed every moment from as early as 6.45pm when Afro-traditional artiste, WaCharie, jumped onto the stage.

He wowed many with songs that has strong African roots such as ‘Marimuka’ and newly-released love-ballad, ‘Kana Wandida’.

Afro-contemporary music diva, Rutendo Jackie put up a well-choreographed act alongside her elegantly-dressed Afro Blue Band that corroborated her excellent singing skills with some corresponding dances.

She belted songs such as ‘Sango’, ‘Zarurai Nzira’, ‘Varimugomba’, ‘Zarura Masango’ and ‘KwaMutare’. Dangamvura-based mbira ensemble, Ntswai Ntswai’s subtle instrumentation, especially on the mbira (thump piano) and congas, made the night more special.

The group showed that they had rehearsed well for the event. Mokoomba took revellers for a merrymaking rollercoaster with some spectacular guitar work, stage cohesion and fine voice management from around 9pm.

Not even a brief power glitch on stage could dent their flawless performance.

Musicians interviewed after the show said they will forever cherish sharing the stage with the multi-award winning ensemble.
“We have actually learnt a lot as a band, especially on stage presentation. As a band, we always strive to do better in every performance and we are glad that we had the privilege to watch them (Mokoomba) performing.

“We also thank fans who came in their numbers to be part of this epic show which was classy and well organised,” said.
Rutendo Jackie. Ntswai Ntswai Arts band leader, Lino Piloto added: “We thank the organisers for offering us such an opportunity to perform alongside the best.

“It was also a great platform for us to exchange notes with all performers tonight. We need such exposure and we are glad that the crowd appreciated every second of our performance,” he said.
