A TWO-YEAR-OLD Chipinge boy who was reportedly missing last week was found dead in a mountain near the family plot on Tuesday.
Chris Bere’s body was found in an advanced state of decomposition on top of a mountain near Mtikwanda Resettlement Area. Chipinge District Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson Detective Assistant Inspector Daniel Mhini confirmed the discovery of Chris’ body, but could not shed more light as investigations are underway.
“I can confirm that the body of Chris Bere who was reportedly missing last week was found dead in a mountain on Tuesday afternoon. Detectives from the Homicide Department attended the scene and conveyed the body to Chipinge District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Investigations are underway and no arrests have been made. Once we finish our investigations, we will furnish you with more details,” he said.
According to neighbours, the boy’s paternal grandmother left him sleeping in the house on December 11 going to the fields around 3pm.
“When she initially checked on him, she saw him sleeping in the house, but during her second check, the boy was nowhere to be seen. She began looking for him. Other villagers told her that they had spotted the boy walking towards the mountain. A search was conducted since December 11, but to no avail,” said a neighbour.
The boy’s maternal grandfather, Mr David Sifulwe, said Chris went to stay with his grandmother when his mother, Ms Loraine Bere, who stays in Masvingo secured a job. He said they did not suspect any foul play, since most people were not around the village when the boy went missing.
