KILLING his uncle over pieces of game meat earned a Chipinge man 15 years behind bars.

Washington Muchandirereka (28) of Manesa Village under Chief Mutema’s area of Chipinge was convicted by Mutare High Court Judge, Justice Isaac Muzenda for murder with constructive intent.

Muchandirereka committed the offence after failing to recover some pieces of game meat which he had given to his uncle, Rofias Musarowa Marowa for safekeeping in June 2020.

He was convicted of murder as defined in Section 47 (1) (a) or (b) of the Criminal Law, (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

In sentencing Muchandirereka, Justice Muzenda, said men who slay their family and friends should not expect protection from the courts, but appropriate justice.

He said Muchandirereka deserves to be behind bars for a long time for him to be rehabilitated.

He therefore sentenced Muchandirereka to effective 15 years imprisonment.

Ms Tinashe Katsiru represented the State.

“Muchandirereka caused the death of Marowa by striking him all over the body with a log.

He did so with the intention to kill him or realising that there was a real risk or possibility that his conduct might cause death.

“Marowa sustained serious injuries resulting in his death,” she said.

The State heard that on June 30, 2020, Muchandirereka who was staying with the now late Marowa went home with game meat and instructed the latter to safe keep it for him.

The meat was meant for their relish. At around 9pm, Muchandirereka returned home, only to find the meat gone.

Marowa failed to account for the meat.

In anger, Muchandirereka took a log and assaulted the older man all over his body and fled from the scene.

Marowa’s body was found the following morning by neighbours.

Post-mortem conducted on the body concluded that Marowa’s death was as a result of poly trauma caused by severe multiple injuries due to the assault.
