In a nasty fight over a woman, a Nyanga MDC Alliance councillor recently stabbed a rival suitor thrice with a knife before indiscriminately assaulting him with an iron rod.
The 33-year-old Nyanga Ward 20 (Troutbeck) councillor, Prosper Murambiza, was convicted of assault and slapped with 12 months imprisonment with an option to pay $4 500 fine when he appeared before a Nyanga magistrate last week on Monday.
Murambiza had pleaded not guilty to the assault charges when he appeared before Ms Constance Marutya.
He was, however, convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
It was the State’s case that on August 12 at around 3am, Murambiza went to Stockdale Mine, where Godfrey Chidawanyika was sleeping with his girlfriend Josephine Mutengezanwa.
Murambiza accused Chidawanyika of having an affair with Mutengezanwa.
An altercation ensued.
Using a knife, the councillor stabbed Chidawanyika twice on the right hand and once on the right knee.
The court heard that Murambiza then withdrew an iron rod from his trousers and used it to attack the complainant.
Murambidza immediately left the scene after the incident.
