MANICALAND Youth Assembly (MAYA) yesterday commemorated the International Day of Peace by donating books to two Sakubva schools as a way of promoting universal peace.

The day is celebrated annually on September 21.

Established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly, the day was devoted to building and strengthening global peace.

This year’s theme was: ‘Recovering Better for an Equitable Sustainable World.’

With the world still recovering from the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic which brought about suffering and also affected learning, MAYA commemorated International Day of Peace by donating 50 reading books each to Chisamba and Dangare primary schools respectively.

In an interview, MAYA programmes officer, Mr Tinashe Muzama, said they had developed a culture of ploughing back into local communities as a way of reminding them that ‘we have each other’s backs’.

Dangare Primary School also benefited from the donation

“We are committed to charitable acts and have found it necessary to give back to the underprivileged among us. The normal way of life was disrupted in the face of the pandemic, thereby also affecting learning.

“Provision of books was in short supply and we decided to chip in and play a part by giving reading material. It is important to inculcate a reading behaviour and culture in pupils, hence this gesture,” said Mr Muzama.

Both schools’ senior teachers, Mr Chikavhanga and Mrs Munyaradzi of Chisamba and Dangare respectively, thanked MAYA for the donation.

They described it as a timely and welcome development.

The schools called on the organisation to extend the kind gesture to their counterparts in local communities who are facing similar challenges of shortages of reading books.
