A married woman from Headlands Township allegedly had a sleep-over at her Harare-based boyfriend’s place and later stole US$100 from him before heading back home.

This emerged at Chief Makoni’s court last week when James Mapani dragged his wife, Lizzie Mugumazano, and her father Edson Mugumazano to court.

Mapani was seeking a divorce.

“My wife left home for Harare on the pretext of taking some money to her relatives. She was supposed to come back the same day, but she did not. She did not even communicate with me. She came back the following day.

“The following morning, I was summoned by the police at Headlands Police Station. The police informed me that my wife had been arrested in connection with theft of money from a man she had spent the night with in Kuwadzana.

“They said the complainant left my wife at his house to take his vehicle from the car park. In his absence, my wife stole some money. When the man returned, he accompanied my wife to the bus stop. The man later realised that his money was missing and he made a report at Headlands Police Station, thereby leading to her arrest. However, the police refused to divulge the man’s identity,” said Mapani.

He said Lizzie’s case was later transferred to Harare where the matter is still pending before courts.

“I informed my father-in-law about the issue but he is failing to co-operate. I have brought him before this court so that he can hear my position. I can’t continue staying with Lizzie,” said Mapani.

ln her defence, Lizzie told the court that she slept at her uncle, Khumbulani Sithole’s house.

She said she owes him some money, adding that she is struggling to pay it back.

However, Mapani told the court he is not aware of any relative by that name. He also said they do not owe anyone money.
Lizzie’s father told the court that the prospect of a reunion between the two was non-existant and offered to take his daughter back.

He said Mapani is harassing his daughter and went on to highlight that he is yet to fully pay her bride price.

The court declined to grant a divorce to the two.

Chief Makoni said the community court does not encourage divorces.
