FOLLOWING episodes of marital disputes, three people from Mutasa and Chipinge recently cut their lives short by consuming poison and hanging themselves respectively.

In the first incident in Charambuya Village under Chief Mutasa, Joseph Sango (43) had a heated argument with his wife Marita Jeranyama (41).

He assaulted Jeranyama and the matter was reported to the police, thereby leading to his arrest. Sango was hauled before the courts and pleaded guilty.

He was asked to pay a fine.

Upon Sango’s return, the couple was embroiled in another altercation, after which he consumed an unknown poisonous substance and lost consciousness.

Jeranyama alerted her husband’s brother, Eric Sango, and they took him to St Peter’s Hospital where he died upon admission.

Marital disputes have led to people taking their own lives

In a separate incident which happened in Chiruwe Village under Chief Mutema’s area in Chipinge, Godfrey Rambo (26) hanged himself from a tree following a misunderstanding with his wife, Muchaneta Chakufeni (27).

The couple had undergone some marital counseling just before the incident.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said Rambo sent a suicidal text message to his wife’s sister, Tarisai Chakufeni.

The text message indicated the exact location where he was going to hang himself.

“Muchaneta had left their matrimonial home following a domestic dispute. The deceased stayed behind until he decided to follow his wife to iron out their differences.

“The couple were taken through some counselling and managed to reconcile. On the same day, the deceased then left his in-laws’ homestead. He left Muchaneta behind but while on his way he started texting suicide messages to Tarisai indicating that he was going to commit suicide,” he said.

When Tarisai rushed to the indicated scene, Rambo had already hanged himself.

In yet another disturbing case, an End Time Church member in Chipinge stormed out of a church service and hanged herself a few metres away from the place of worship.

Precious Mushunje (40), left a suicide note stating that she had been stressed out by her husband’s unemployment and ‘‘helplessness’’.

When her 11-year-old son discovered that she had stormed out of the church, he went outside to investigate.

“A search party was conducted with the help of church members and her dead body was found a few metres from the church premises,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged warring couples to find amicable ways to solve their disputes.
