THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is working on enhancing inclusivity in Manicaland schools to accommodate physically challenged pupils and those from vulnerable backgrounds.

This was said by Manicaland Provincial Education Director Mr Edward Shumba, as he also highlighted that there was a shortage of special needs teachers in many of the province’s schools.

“As a Ministry, we are calling on parents and guardians to ensure that all children of school-going age are receiving education because this is a right they are entitled to. It is actually against the law to deny children education.

“Despite disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds and physical challenges, every child must be in school and we all have a role to play in our communities to ensure that this end is achieved,” said Mr Shumba.

He added that plans are on course to capacitate teachers to use braille and sign language during lesson delivery in cases where it is required.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education recently rolled out provincial community outreach programmes with the aim of improving physically challenged children’s access to quality and affordable education in line with Government’s National Development Strategy 1.
