Manicaland braces for YES Games

MANICALAND provincial Youth Education Through Sports (YES) Games were held recently in a bid to select the best and strong teams that will represent the province in Hwange next month.

The Games are set for December 9 to 13. A total of 18 primary and secondary schools as well as clubs from all the seven districts of the province attended the selection tournament.

Athletes selected will compete in different disciplines including football, netball and volleyball.

In the boys’ soccer category, Fern Valley was on the top spot followed by St Faith’s High School and Mutare-Haarlem, while in the women’s soccer category, Vengere Primary School, Mutare-Haarlem and Masocha were the top three in that order. In netball, Chabata Primary, Chisamba Primary and Lydia Chimonyo were the best three in the province.

eanwhile, in boys’ volleyball, Eastern Valley, Mutambara High School and St Faith’s High School were the leading teams.

In girls’ volleyball category, St David’s Bonda Girls’ High School was on first position followed by Mutare Girls’ High School and Lydia Chimonyo respectively.

The final provincial squad will be selected from the top three teams in each category.

The National YES Games were initiated in 1999 with funding from international organisations and the hosting rotates from one province to another on a yearly basis. More than 1 000 athletes and 500 delegates from across the country are expected to attend the Games in Chinhoyi.
