A MUTARE woman is threatening to commit suicide as her husband is neglecting his family after squandering his pension with his sister.

Trust Chimbuya appeared at the Mutare Magistrate Civil Court applying for a protection order against his wife, Cynthia Marerwa, whom he accuses of threatening to commit suicide.

The couple appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato.

However, Mr Chipato dismissed the protection order application saying Chimbuya should use proper channels to solve his marital challenges.

Marerwa said she has been married to Chimbuya for 22 years, but her husband saw it fit to spend his pension with his sister.

“I am the one who would wake up early in the morning to heat water for his bath. I would cook for him for all those years when he was gainfully employed, but he did the unthinkable and squandered all his pension with his sister. This is a bitter pill for me to swallow.

“What about me, am I not his wife? Don’t I deserve the privilege of enjoying the fruits of my husband’s labour? My children are now suffering because of the two’s selfishness,” charged Marerwa.

She also said Chimbuya is in the habit of disappearing from home without divulging his whereabouts.

“He no longer sleeps at home. I do not know where he sleeps and when he comes back, he accuses me of being moody, but how can I be happy when my husband is behaving like a teenager due to the money he has?

“Money comes and go. We have been a better family without money. I wish they hadn’t given him that lump sum as pension,” said Marerwa.

She added: “He is keeping part of the pension at his sister’s house. I tried to reason with her, but she turned a deaf ear to me. I do not know what to do now.

“I have been harbouring suicide thoughts for a long time now. I am his wife and the mother to his children and I deserve some respect,” she said.

In response, Chimbuya said he is no longer leading a peaceful life due to his wife’s endless suicide threats.

“Ever since I received my pension, my wife has been threatening to commit suicide.

The day I received the money, I went home and there was no one there. I met my sister on my way to the bar and gave her the money for safekeeping. I was afraid to lose it at the bar,” he said.

Chimbuya said he is always forgetting to collect the money from his sister.
